Sabbath at the shoemakers house, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, 1991

Novgorod on the Volga River, one of the oldest Russian cities, was an important trade destination for Slavic, Turkic and Jewish merchants from medieval times. Here, the religious movement known as the "Heresy of the Judaizers" began to spread in the 1470s, eventually attracting high-ranking statesmen and even the local royal court. A permanent Jewish community was founded only in the early 19th century, by soldiers discharged from the army of Nicholas I . In 1873 it received permission to maintain a synagogue, which was shut down in 1938 by Stalin’s order.

the introduction to the book of disquiet has me hooked!

Reblogging things I like feels a lot more goblinesque than upvoting ever did. The upvotes felt like "hmm yes, I approve *golf claps*" while reblogging feels like furtively staring at something before shoving it in your mouth and scurrying back underneath the nearest piece of furniture.

Which isn't to say that I don't like it. But I definitely find myself going "maybe I shouldn't reblog this because I've already reblogged a bunch of things today and I don't want to look like I don't have a life," I say as I close the app and reopen it like one of those little automatic box toys with the switches.

whatever show the girlies are obsessed with nowadays will never have as much sexual tension as this

“I never saw anyone work so hard. She was tireless in learning both the songs and the dances. It wasn’t like Cyd Charisse or Ginger Rogers, who did it all the time. Roger Edens would say, ‘Audrey, take tomorrow off. You’ve been working sixteen hours a day’. She’d say, ‘No, I’ll be here at nine’. And then she’d be there at eight.” Leonard Gershe (Funny Face screenwriter)

“I was not an actress when I came to movies. I was a dancer. So, I had no experience. I had experience in working, working hard. Ballet is hard. Discipline. Those were the things I could contribute.” Audrey Hepburn
